Seeing how we are approaching the end of 2011, let the 2012 stock market prediction game officially begin. And, first up to bat, is none other than Doug Kass. And no, his gnome appears not to have any say in this prediction as far as I can tell. He hasn't been heard from in a while - perhaps he went rogue. Anyway, Mr. Kass comes out swinging for the fences saying the stock market with hit an all time high in late 2012 based on pro-growth political strategy and the U.S. economy continuing to recover and the S&P will rise to

Despite the craziness of the stock market these days, what with it shooting up and then down in a blink of the eye, or at least whenever there's a rumor about some kind of temporary solution in Europe, Doug Kass is staying long the stock market and buying any dips.

Doug Kass Calls Housing Bottom in U.S.

Nov 30, 2011

Doug Kass is calling a housing bottom in the United States. Yes, he says the bottom is here for the struggling housing market. However, as one Tweeter said below, Kass's partner over at The Street, Jim Cramer, actually beat him to this housing bottom call a few years ago. Oops. Well, we'll see how right Kass is on this call. At least it looks like Kass's call will be closer to the housing bottom than Cramer's.

Doug Kass Is Now Short Groupon

Nov 4, 2011

On his Twitter feed Doug Kass announced he was shorting Groupon: "I am short Groupon today" he said in a Tweet below. And it looks like it was a wise move, as the stock was hanging around $30 a share only to drop down to $26 at the close. The knock of course against the Groupon IPO is how they released a small number of shares, and that's why the stock shot up, jumping 50% at the open. However, the big issue with Groupon is will they be able to stay in business when big players like Google

Does Doug Kass Still Like the Life Insurance Stocks?

Oct 15, 2011

About three months ago, Doug Kass went on CNBC's Fast Money and said if you were afraid to buy the bank stocks, you should put your money to work by buying insurance companies like Hartford International, Lincoln National, Metlife and Prudential. He said they were cheap back then, before the stock market collapsed on all of the European debt fears, I wonder if he still likes them today, as they're 'extra' cheap now. On June 29th, when Kass made the call, Lincoln National (LNC) was trading at $28 a share, now it's $18 a share. Hartford Financial (HIG) was trading at

Doug Kass’s Gnome Sees Yahoo Takeover

Doug Kass's gnome is an active fellow. Although still a mystery as to who he is, Kass's gnome is always hearing takeover rumors and the like. The latest rumor is the ever talked about take over of Yahoo. And again, not surprisingly, Microsoft's name was floated around. Yahoo turned down Microsoft over three years ago, when their stock was trading at around $33 a share. However, Kass's gnome dismissed that rumor - saying that Microsoft would be interested in only parts of Yahoo. Earlier in the week the gnome said a more likely takeover scenario of Yahoo would

Doug Kass is Long ETrade, Says It Will Be Bought

Sep 30, 2011

Doug Kass, the man who often puts a gun to his head and listens to a gnome from time to time, is saying his biggest long position in the stock market is ETrade. The stock ticker is ETFC. Why is he long the stock? Well, he believes ETrade will be bought by TD Ameritrade or Charles Schwab by the end of the year. Here's his tweet saying just this: If ETrade is bought out at $15-$16 per share, that's nearly a double, as it's trading at close to $9 a share today. What do you think? Are

Gun to His Head Doug Kass

Along with getting advice from his wise little gnome, Doug Kass also has a gun to his head from time to time. Yes, Kass, is in the stock trading business and not a cop or fighting some war or a drug dealer. The gun to his head metaphor is his way of saying, 'If I had to say something about something right now, if I was forced to make a choice since there was a gun to my head, I'd say this.' And usually he's right, about the highs and lows of the day in a certain sector or

It's still a bit of mystery as to who exactly is Doug Kass's gnome, but if you're worried about him during hurricane Irene, don't be. Kass says his gnome is far away from the East Coast and in the Alps somewhere. So, sleep soundly now and know we will hear again from his famous gnome when the stock market is back in full swing.

Who is Doug Kass’s Gnome?

Aug 26, 2011

Every now and then Doug Kass, of Seabreeze Partners and The Street.com, and more famously known through his frequent appearances on CNBC's Fast Money, will refer to his legendary 'gnome' sending him some kind of message. He'll tweet something like, "My gnome is hearing now..." or "My gnome is telling me...". So, who exactly is this gnome. Is it just Doug Kass's gut feeling and the gnome is nothing more than a representation of that? Or is it a real Smurf like gnome, perhaps more greenish than blue, though, and maybe a bit taller? Or, is his
