What was not released to the press though was that Panetta, the former CIA director, told members of the super committee that he would do extensive background checks on each of them and enlist the full force of his former CIA secret powers upon them if they didn’t act quickly. The members turned pale and bowed their heads and said they would act.
Later that day each member of the super committee seemed to feel like they were being watched and if they stopped and looked over their shoulders there was always man in a suit and sunglasses pretending to read a newspaper on the street corner.
